What is application modernization?
Application modernization updates how an existing application is built, hosted and delivered, moving it to managed Azure services such as App Service, Container Apps, AKS or Azure SQL. The aim is lower running cost, faster releases and a supported, secure platform, without rewriting the business logic from scratch.
Should we rewrite the application or re-platform it?
Re-platforming is usually the right first step: move the app to managed services, fix the framework and deployment pipeline, and measure the result. A full rewrite is justified only where the business logic itself is the problem, and our assessment says which applications fall into that group.
Which Azure service should our application run on?
App Service suits most web applications and APIs. Azure Container Apps fits containerized microservices without the overhead of Kubernetes. AKS is for complex, large-scale container estates. Azure Functions handles event-driven work. We choose per application rather than applying one pattern across the portfolio.
How long does a modernization project take?
The assessment takes 2 to 4 weeks and produces a prioritized backlog. A single representative application is typically modernized in 6 to 12 weeks, after which the pattern repeats faster across the portfolio.
Will modernization reduce our Azure costs?
Usually, yes. Lifted-and-shifted VMs run continuously regardless of demand; managed services scale to load and remove patching and licensing overhead. We baseline the current spend and track the modernized cost against it.

Yes. We run the modernized version in parallel, use staging slots and phased traffic shifting, and keep a rollback path for every release, so users move across without a hard cutover.
