What is data loss prevention?
Data loss prevention (DLP) detects and prevents sensitive information, such as personal data, health records, card numbers or confidential documents, from being shared inappropriately through email, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, endpoints or cloud apps. Microsoft Purview combines DLP with data classification, sensitivity labels, encryption, insider risk management and data lifecycle management.

- Sensitivity labels – encryption, visual markings and auto-labelling.
- DLP policies – for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, endpoints and cloud apps, started in simulation mode.
- Insider risk management – detect risky data activity such as departing-employee data theft.

Data protection and DLP FAQs
Common questions about Microsoft Purview and DLP.
Which licences do we need for Microsoft Purview DLP?
Basic DLP for Exchange, SharePoint and OneDrive is included in Microsoft 365 E3 and Business Premium. Endpoint DLP, Teams DLP, auto-labelling and insider risk management generally require E5, E5 Compliance or specific add-ons.
What are sensitivity labels?
Labels applied to emails and documents that classify them and can enforce protection such as encryption, watermarks and access restrictions.
Will DLP block users from working?
We start policies in simulation mode, review matches, and introduce policy tips before blocking, so legitimate work continues.
How does Purview help with Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Copilot can surface any content a user has access to. Purview labels, DLP and oversharing reports help ensure sensitive data is properly restricted before rollout.
Does DLP help with UAE PDPL compliance?
DLP is one of several technical measures that support personal data protection obligations under the UAE PDPL. It should be combined with governance, policies and legal advice.
