What is third-party risk management?

Third-party risk management (TPRM), also called vendor risk management, is the process of identifying, assessing, monitoring and reducing the risks that suppliers and service providers introduce. Cyber risk is usually the biggest component: a vendor with access to your systems or data can become the entry point for a breach.

Frameworks such as NIST CSF 2.0 (the Govern function and supply chain risk management category), ISO 27001 Annex A and SOC 2 all expect documented supplier oversight.

What our TPRM service includes

  • Vendor inventory and tiering – identify every third party and rank them by data access, system access and business criticality.
  • Assessment methodology – risk-based questionnaires, evidence requests and review of SOC 2 or ISO 27001 reports.
  • Contract security clauses – minimum security requirements, breach notification and right-to-audit terms.
  • Onboarding and offboarding workflow – security review before contract signature and access removal at exit.
  • Continuous monitoring – reassessment cycles and monitoring of high-risk vendors, supported by digital risk protection.
  • Reporting – vendor risk dashboards for leadership and audit evidence packs.

How we build your TPRM programme

  1. Discover – build the vendor inventory from finance, procurement and identity data.
  2. Tier – classify vendors as critical, high, medium or low risk.
  3. Assess – assess critical and high-risk vendors first.
  4. Remediate – agree remediation actions or compensating controls.
  5. Operate – embed the process in procurement and run reassessments on a schedule.

Third-party risk management FAQs

Common questions about vendor risk programmes.

The terms are often used interchangeably. Third-party risk management is slightly broader and can include partners, distributors and affiliates as well as vendors.

Start with vendors that hold sensitive data, have access to your systems, or would disrupt operations if they failed. These are usually tiered as critical or high risk.

A SOC 2 Type 2 report is strong evidence, but you still need to check its scope, exceptions and the complementary user entity controls you are responsible for.

Critical vendors are typically reassessed annually, with continuous monitoring in between. Lower-risk vendors can be reviewed every two to three years.

Yes. We can operate the programme as a managed service, assessing vendors and reporting results to your team.
