What is retrieval-augmented generation?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) combines search with a large language model. When a user asks a question, the system retrieves the most relevant passages from your approved content, then the model writes an answer grounded in those passages and cites them. This reduces made-up answers and keeps responses tied to your own information.

How is this different from Microsoft 365 Copilot?
Copilot works across Microsoft 365 content for each user. A custom RAG assistant targets a specific knowledge domain, can include non-Microsoft sources, and gives you full control over behaviour and interface.
Will the assistant make up answers?
RAG reduces this by grounding answers in retrieved content and citing sources. We also test accuracy and configure the assistant to say when it does not know.
Can it respect document permissions?
Yes. We design retrieval so users only receive answers from content they are allowed to access.
