Does Microsoft back up Microsoft 365 data?
Microsoft operates Microsoft 365 under a shared responsibility model. Microsoft provides service resilience and features such as recycle bins and retention policies, but these are not designed as independent, point-in-time backups you control. If data is deleted beyond retention periods, encrypted by ransomware or corrupted by a sync error, recovery can be limited. A dedicated backup gives you separate, restorable copies.

Is Microsoft 365 data backed up by Microsoft?
Microsoft protects the service and provides retention features, but under the shared responsibility model protecting your data is your responsibility. A separate backup gives independent, point-in-time copies.
Aren’t retention policies enough?
Retention policies help with compliance, but they are not designed for fast, granular restores after ransomware or mass deletion, and they can be changed by an attacker with admin access.
Which data can be backed up?
