What is a virtual CISO?

A virtual CISO (vCISO), also called a fractional or outsourced CISO, is an experienced Chief Information Security Officer who works with your organization part-time under a service agreement. The vCISO performs the same core job as an in-house CISO: setting security strategy, managing cyber risk, overseeing compliance and reporting to leadership, but at a fraction of the cost and with faster onboarding.

For most mid-size organizations the gap is not tools, it is ownership. A vCISO closes that gap by turning security into a managed programme with priorities, budgets, metrics and clear accountability.

What our vCISO service includes

  • Security strategy and roadmap – a 12 to 24 month plan aligned to business goals and a recognised framework such as the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 or ISO 27001.
  • Risk management – a living risk register, risk acceptance decisions and treatment plans that leadership signs off.
  • Compliance oversight – programme management for SOC 2 readiness, ISO 27001 implementation, HIPAA, UAE PDPL and the UAE Information Assurance (NESA) standard.
  • Policies and governance – security policies and audit evidence that match how your business actually operates.
  • Board and executive reporting – quarterly security posture reports in business language, with KPIs and budget recommendations.
  • Customer and insurer assurance – ownership of security questionnaires and cyber insurance applications.
  • Incident leadership – a named security lead who coordinates your incident response plan, tabletop exercises and live response.
  • Vendor risk – oversight of your third-party risk management programme.

How a vCISO engagement works

  1. Baseline assessment (first 30 days) – interviews, control review and a NIST CSF gap assessment to measure current maturity.
  2. Roadmap and budget – a prioritised plan with quick wins, 90-day goals and a cost estimate for leadership approval.
  3. Ongoing leadership – regular working sessions with IT and leadership, risk register updates and vendor decisions.
  4. Quarterly reporting – progress against the roadmap, top risks and metrics presented to executives or the board.
  5. Annual review – reassessment of maturity and an updated roadmap for the next year.

vCISO vs full-time CISO vs vCIO

A full-time CISO makes sense when security is a daily executive concern across a large or highly regulated organization. A vCISO suits organizations that need the same expertise a few days a month. A vCIO is different again: a vCIO plans IT investment and operations, while a vCISO focuses on cyber risk, compliance and security governance. Many of our clients use both. Virtual CISO FAQs

Common questions from UAE and US leaders considering a vCISO.

A virtual CISO sets and runs your security programme on a part-time basis. That includes strategy, risk management, policies, compliance oversight, vendor risk, incident leadership and reporting to executives or the board.

Organizations of roughly 50 to 500 employees that face customer, insurer or regulatory security requirements but have no dedicated security leader. It also suits larger companies covering a CISO vacancy.

It depends on the retainer. Most engagements combine scheduled working sessions each month with asynchronous work on roadmaps, policies and reports. We agree hours and deliverables before the engagement starts.

A vCIO plans IT strategy, budgets and operations. A vCISO focuses on cyber risk, security governance and compliance. Both can work together under one plan.

Yes. A vCISO typically owns the readiness programme, coordinates control implementation and evidence, and works with your auditor or certification body. The SOC 2 report itself is issued by an independent CPA firm, and ISO 27001 certificates by an accredited certification body.

Yes. We serve organizations across the UAE and in the United States, with remote delivery and on-site sessions in the UAE as needed.
